By downloading or using one of our apps, you agree to these terms. If you do not agree with them, please do not use the app.
Your licence
We grant you a personal, non-transferable licence to use our apps on devices you own or control, for your own use. You may not resell them, rent them out, or try to extract their source code. Apps bought from the App Store are also covered by Apple's Licensed Application End User License Agreement; where these terms and Apple's conflict, Apple's apply.
Subscriptions (Meal Metrics)
Meal Metrics offers an auto-renewing subscription for logging your meals — naming the food in a photograph or in a sentence you typed or spoke (using OpenAI's models), scanning barcodes and searching foods. Everything is included free for the first week; after it, logging meals needs a subscription. What you have already logged stays yours: your records, the full nutrient report, history and editing stay open with no subscription and no account.
- What it costs and how long it lasts is shown on the purchase screen in the app, in your own currency, before you buy.
- Payment is charged to your Apple Account at confirmation of purchase.
- It renews automatically unless you turn off auto-renew at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. Your account is charged for renewal within 24 hours before the period ends.
- To manage or cancel, go to Settings on your device, tap your name, then Subscriptions. Deleting the app does not cancel a subscription.
- Free trial. Before subscribing, each installation gets everything for a limited number of days, with a fair-use allowance of photos and messages per day. The exact numbers are stated in the app. This allowance is counted on our server against a random identifier, so reinstalling does not reset it. Barcodes and search do not count towards it.
- Fair use. Photos and messages are subject to a daily fair-use limit (currently 40 a day for subscribers), which exists to keep the service fast and affordable for everyone and which almost nobody reaches. The app shows the current number under About, and warns you when you are close to it. Barcodes and search don't count towards it. We may change the fair-use number; it will always be shown in the app.
- Refunds are handled by Apple, not by us, under the App Store terms.
Fair use
Our server exists to serve the app. You agree not to call it from anything else, not to attempt to work around the usage limits, and not to use it to process anything other than your own food. We apply rate limits and daily caps, and we may refuse or limit requests that appear automated or abusive. Persistent abuse may result in a device being blocked.
Not medical or nutritional advice
This is the important one. Meal Metrics is a calorie and nutrient counter, not a medical device, and nothing in it is advice about you.
- The reference amounts shown are population reference values calculated from your height, weight, age and sex using standard public formulas. They are not targets, not a prescription, and not personalised to your health.
- Nutrient figures come from the USDA FoodData Central database and, for packaged products, from Open Food Facts. Where a food is missing from both, the app shows an estimate and labels it as one.
- Portion weights are estimates made by a model looking at a photograph or reading a sentence. They can be wrong, sometimes substantially. Every number in the app can be corrected by you, and where accuracy matters you should weigh your food.
- Do not use this app to make decisions about medication, a medical condition, or a clinical diet. Speak to a doctor or a registered dietitian.
Availability
We try to keep things working, but we do not promise the app or its server will be available without interruption. Features that depend on a third-party model provider or database may change or stop working if that provider changes. If a paid feature becomes permanently unavailable, contact us.
Liability
Our apps are provided "as is". To the extent permitted by law, we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss arising from using them. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law — including liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud. If you are a consumer, you keep all the statutory rights your local law gives you, and nothing here affects them.
Changes
We may update these terms. The "Last updated" date above reflects the latest revision. Material changes affecting a subscription will be brought to your attention in the app.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the Federal Republic of Germany, excluding the UN Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods. If you are a consumer, this does not deprive you of the protection of the mandatory law of the country where you live, and you may bring proceedings in the courts there.
